God of Carnage

Reason is set to fly out the window when Queensland Theatre Company and Black Swan State Theatre Company present the Australian premiere of God of Carnage, a black comedy of bad behaviour.

When two 11-year-old boys get into a fight at school, their educated and civilised parents meet to discuss a UN-style junior peace pact. What begins as an agonisingly polite discussion over espresso and cake, rapidly deteriorates into a rum-fired slanging match. Husbands turn on wives, and wives turn on each other as a well-intentioned attempt at conflict resolution careers hilariously out of control.

In this expert analysis of social hypocrisy playwright Yasmina Reza draws focus to the thin line that separates civilized behaviour from barbarism, and suggests society is somewhat less advanced than we’d like to think.

Director Michael Gow says “Reza has a lot of fun dissecting the civilised manners of Western society. It’s a joy to watch the middle classes abandoning all pretence at manners and revealing their nasty inner-selves.”

Sharp and adult, God of Carnage is forensic and funny observation of middle-class attitudes.
