The Year of Magical Thinking
In a true story of an intense love, Queensland Theatre Company presents The Year of Magical Thinking, a one-woman show directed by Cate Blanchett, starring Robyn Nevin and written by Joan Didion.
In the space of a year Didion, a renowned novelist, essayist and intellectual, lost her husband of 40 years and endured the long-term illness of her daughter. What followed was a year of ‘magical thinking’ – the refusal to come to terms with their deaths.
The Year of Magical Thinking is a work of surpassing clarity and honesty. It is a shimmering portrait of a marriage – and a life – that will speak to anyone who has ever loved a husband, wife or child.
Based on Didion’s best-selling memoir, the play is a compassionate and poignant exploration of an intensely personal yet universal experience. Woven through her account of the months after her husband’s death are fleeting memories of events and persistent snippets of past conversations.
Playwright Joan Didion describes The Year of Magical Thinking as a story “about death, about illness, about probability and luck, about good fortune and bad, about marriage and children and memory, about grief, about the ways in which people do and do not deal with the fact that life ends, about the shallowness of sanity, about life itself.”
