The Crucible
Brisbane will be treated to one of the most potent and rousingly heroic plays of modern theatre when Queensland Theatre Company presents Arthur Miller’s The Crucible in 2009.
The Crucible is a gripping masterpiece that passionately dramatises the unending battle between reason and madness and remains a profound plea for honesty and courage.
When a group of young girls from a deeply religious community are caught dancing naked in the woods, they claim to be possessed by witches. Moral panic spreads through the town of Salem and accusations pile up against many of the leading townsfolk, including the well respected John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth.
As the community begins to tear itself apart no one dares to question the girls, or their accusations, for fear of being denounced themselves. But are the girls telling the truth, or merely lying for their own benefit? Proctor and the other accused are faced with a final, terrible moral choice: confess to a crime which they did not commit, or maintain their innocence and hang.
Director Michael Gow says “This modern revival of Miller’s classic work is a powerful portrayal of the damaging effects of intolerance, bigotry, paranoia and applies just as much to the current climate of religious and political extremism as it did during the McCarthy era during which it was written, and the Salem witch trials in which it’s set. The ability to stage a production with a cast of 19 actors is a rare one that bucks the trend in Australian theatre and is a challenge the Company eagerly anticipates.”
