If you’re hungry for your yearly dose of cutting edge cabaret it’s time for that other ‘F-word’. It might not be a festival but Brisbane Powerhouse will serve up a cabaret feast that will have you snacking on the sublime and gorging on gorgeous delights this October.
Salivate over three sensational shows that bring some of the worlds most talented, original and irresistible cabaret acts to Brisbane: Camille O’Sullivan’s The Dark Angel, Mikelangelo & The Black Sea Gentlemen and, direct from Paris, Ronan/Ronan.
Fresh from sell out seasons in New York, Edinburgh, Sydney, Melbourne and right here at Brisbane Powerhouse with her show La Fille Du Cirque, French-Irish chanteuse, Camille O'Sullivan will perform her new show The Dark Angel in the Powerhouse Theatre on Sunday 26 October.
In this multi-award winning show, the versatile, unpredictable and undoubtedly enchanting Camille performs the songs of Nick Cave, Jacques Brel, Tom Waits and David Bowie, transforming effortlessly into different characters with each song. Nothing is quite as it seems.
The rich, dark and deeply funny gypsy outfit, Mikelangelo & The Black Sea Gentlemen, bring their unique brand of Kabaret Noir to Brisbane on Saturday 25 October to take audiences on a truly emotional, if somewhat satirical, journey.
Jumping on tables, interacting with the audience and visiting the bar mid-show is partly what makes this quintet of intriguing characters so madly appealing. The rest is pure musical brilliance. Their truly macabre stories are told through monologues, dramatic re-enactments and of course the satirical songs for which their Eastern European style arrangements are perfect.
Completing this magical and mesmerising menu is the completely unique and slightly mad Ronan/Ronan, whirling into the VISY Theatre on Thursday 23 October. A musician, singer, clown and poet, Ronan/Ronan creates lyrical mayhem among a joyous bric-a-brac of colour, turntable decks, children’s toys and a box full of treasure, performing light hearted yet haphazard songs that you are sure to sing along to.
With his music created completely live with just acoustic instruments and a loop pedal, Ronan/Ronan’s performance is comical and visually amazing as it teeters on the brink of surreal musical madness.
The cabaret feast serves up the glamour and the magic at Brisbane Powerhouse from 23 – 26 October 2008.
