José Carbó played Figaro in Opera Queensland's production of The Barber of Seville.
José was born in Argentina. He moved to Australia with his family at an early age and completed his musical studies at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music (now the Sydney Conservatorium of Music). In 2005, he won The Australian Singing Competition’s Opera Award.
José made his debut with Opera Australia as The Wig-Maker in Ariadne auf Naxos. His subsequent performances for the company include the roles of Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and First Officer in the world première production of Madeline Lee. For Opera Queensland, he performed the title role in Don Giovanni.
José’s international engagements include the roles of Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Belcore in L’elisir d’amore (for Teatro Real, Madrid), the title role in Le nozze di Figaro (for Teatro dell’Opera, Rome), Dandini in La Cenerentola (at the festival in La Coruña, Spain), Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor (for Canterbury Opera, New Zealand) and Escamillo in Carmen (for Dunedin Opera Company, New Zealand).
On the concert platform, he has appeared extensively with the leading orchestras in Australia and New Zealand. His engagements include performing as the baritone soloist in Rachmaninov’s The Bells (with the Sydney Youth Orchestra), Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and The Queensland Orchestra), Orff’s Carmina Burana (with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Willoughby Symphony Orchestra & Choir, The University of New South Wales Orchestra and Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra) and appearing in a concert performance of La rondine (with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra). In 2006, José travelled to Japan with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to perform Ravel’s songs from Don Quixote in Tokyo and Osaka. His repertoire also includes Beethoven’s Mass in C major and Choral Symphony, Fauré’s Requiem, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem and Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G minor.
In November, José will resurrect his role of Figaro in The Barber of Seville for the State Opera of South Australia.
