Valley Fiesta highlights

The ones you don't want to miss
Operator Please Operator Please

There's so many bands and artists playing at this year's Valley Fiesta, it's hard to know where to begin.

Here's our pick of the best. You don't want to miss these.

Operator Please

These Gold Coast teenagers can do no wrong at the moment. Along with The Grates, they're the hottest thing to emerge from south-east Queensland in recent times. Their infectious brand of spiky pop is everywhere. One listen to 'Just A Song About Ping Pong' and you can't get it out of your head.

Operator Please headline the Carlton Dry Street Stage on Friday night. Read more about the high school battle of the bands winners who have gone on to global success:

Smooth operators - April 2008

Pop prodigies - November 2007

Cementing friendships - May 2007

Getting connected - March 2007

The Winnie Coopers

Another fine act from the Gold Coast - what are they putting in the water down there? These five funk connoisseurs deliver lashings of soul and dollops of reggae served on a bed of humorous yet socially conscious hip-hop. With a string of international supports and national festivals under their belt, they're heading to Valley Fiesta to headline the Chinatown Mall Stage on Friday night. It'll be a tough choice between them and Operator Please!

Bone up on the band named after a character from the TV show The Wonder Years:

Coopers sparkling - March 2008

Food for thought - May 2007

Urthboy

Urthboy (or Tim Levinson to his mum) is a Sydney hip-hop artist, best known as a member of The Herd. While The Herd have more of a political focus, Urthboy's solo work has a basis in personal experiences, and like all good Aussie hip-hop he tells an enjoyable, humourous story.

Jeff Lang

A guitarist, singer and songwriter, Jeff Lang has built up a reputation for startlingly original performances, with his eloquent guitar, sweet voice and plainspoken yet sensitive songs. John Butler is a fan, and when you see Lang headline the Carlton Dry Street Stage on Sunday night you will be too.

Jeff Lang discusses his latest album Half Seas Over:

Bridging the seas of time - July 2008

The Boat People

The Boaties hail from Warwick, and are definitely ones to watch. Described by Inpress as the "masters of perfectly unconventional pop", they're also Triple J darlings, where their singles are always on the high rotation playlists. You'll love their bold, original, vibrant pop-rock when you see them on the Carlton Dry Street Stage on Saturday evening.

Currently doing the festival rounds, The Boaties' James O’Brian recently took time out for a chat with us:
