War: The prints of Otto Dix
This exhibition presents the complete portfolio of 51 etchings that make up Der Krieg (War) 1924, an extremely important print series by the German artist Otto Dix (1891–1969).
Der Krieg ranks alongside Picasso’s Guernica as one of the most powerful indictments of war created in the twentieth century. Consciously drawing on Goya’s Disasters of War c.1810, the graphic depictions of human suffering and the violence of war in Der Krieg bear witness to Dix’s own experience fighting in the trenches for the German army in World War One.
